Luxury Leisure Without Vulgarity
The Art of Beachy Elegance
A client recently sent me photos from her upcoming resort itinerary with a question that made me smile: "Is there a way to be sexy without looking like I'm trying too hard or being inappropriate?”
Her concern reveals something I hear constantly from accomplished women planning luxury beach holidays: confusion about where the line falls between elegant resort wear and the overtly revealing aesthetic.
Before we discuss specific pieces or styling choices, we need to address the mindset that creates elegant beach presence rather than vulgarity masquerading as luxury.
Luxury leisure elegance begins with recognising that you're in public spaces – resort pools, beach clubs, restaurants, and common areas – where certain standards of presentation apply regardless of the relaxed atmosphere. The presence of a beach doesn't eliminate all social codes; it simply adjusts them.

Swimwear: The Foundation of Beach Elegance
Your swimsuit choices set the tone for your entire resort presence. The goal is finding pieces that flatter your body, feel comfortable, and maintain elegance while allowing you to actually swim, move, and enjoy beach activities.
Well-fitted one-pieces in classic cuts often look more sophisticated than bikinis, particularly at upscale resorts. This doesn't mean matronly coverage – contemporary one-pieces offer everything from plunging necklines to cut-outs to high-leg silhouettes that are undeniably sexy while maintaining elegance.
If you prefer bikinis, choose styles with adequate coverage and support rather than the minimal string styles that require constant adjustment. A well-constructed bikini top that actually supports you looks far better than constantly tugging at something that's sliding or shifting.
Pay attention to fabric quality. Cheap swimwear loses shape quickly, pills after minimal wear, and often becomes see-through when wet. Investment pieces from brands like Eres, Melissa Odabash, or Zimmermann maintain their shape and opacity, fitting better and lasting seasons rather than a single holiday.
The Critical Role of Cover-Ups

The difference between vulgar beach presence and elegant resort wear often comes down to cover-ups. These pieces allow you to transition from beach to pool to restaurant areas without being inappropriately exposed.
A well-chosen kaftan in quality fabric – silk, cotton voile, or linen – provides coverage while remaining breezy and beautiful. Choose lengths that fall mid-thigh to midi for versatility. Sheer kaftans work over swimwear but shouldn't be so transparent they're essentially decorative rather than functional.
Elegant shirt dresses in lightweight fabrics work beautifully over swimwear and can transition to lunch or casual resort dining with the addition of sandals and minimal jewelry. White linen or striped cotton creates classic resort elegance.
Sarongs and pareos offer versatility when you know how to tie them properly. Learn a few classic wraps – as a skirt, as a dress, as a shoulder cover – so you can adjust coverage for different resort areas and activities.
Avoid the mistake of treating cover-ups as optional. Walking through resort common areas, restaurants, or lobbies in only swimwear – regardless of how expensive or well-fitted – reads as thoughtless rather than liberated. Most upscale resorts actually have dress codes requiring cover-ups in certain areas; observing these without being told demonstrates social awareness.
Resort Wear Beyond the Beach
Luxury beach destinations involve more than just beach and pool time. Evening dinners, daytime activities, spa visits, and resort exploration all require appropriate attire that maintains the relaxed holiday atmosphere while remaining polished.
For daytime resort wear beyond the beach, think elevated casual: well-fitted linen trousers or midi skirts with silk camisoles, cotton shirt dresses in quality fabrics, or elegant rompers in sophisticated colours. These pieces work for resort lunches, exploring nearby towns, or spa appointments.
Evening resort wear occupies a specific category between casual and formal. Flowing maxi dresses in beautiful prints or solid colors, chic jumpsuits, or sophisticated separates all work.
Avoid overdressing for resort dinners unless you're at the most formal establishments. A cocktail dress at a beachside restaurant often appears out of touch with the environment. Similarly, appearing in cutoff shorts and a tank top at a nice resort restaurant misreads the situation in the opposite direction.
Footwear matters more than many people realize. Quality leather sandals, elegant espadrilles, or refined slides elevate any outfit. Plastic flip-flops, athletic sandals, or worn-down shoes undermine otherwise polished resort wear.
The Sexy-Elegant Balance

The question of whether you can be sexy and still elegant deserves direct addressing because many women feel tension between these concepts, as if choosing elegance means suppressing attractiveness.
True sexy elegance comes from confidence and strategic choices rather than maximum exposure. A beautifully fitted one-piece that highlights your figure while allowing you to move confidently is infinitely sexier than a bikini you're constantly adjusting and feeling self-conscious in.
Strategic coverage often creates more intrigue than displaying everything. A high-leg swimsuit shows legs beautifully. A plunging neckline draws eyes upward to your face. A backless dress or swimsuit creates drama. The key is choosing one focal point rather than trying to highlight everything simultaneously.
Quality and fit matter more than style. A perfectly fitted, well-constructed piece in a simple style looks sexier than an elaborate design that doesn't fit properly or requires constant adjustment.
Confidence is the most attractive quality you can cultivate. The woman who seems completely comfortable in her own skin, who moves with ease rather than self-consciousness, who clearly enjoys herself rather than performing for observers – she’s always the most magnetic person on any beach.
Common Mistakes That Tip Into Vulgarity
Understanding what crosses the line from sexy elegance into vulgarity helps you avoid these pitfalls while still looking attractive and feeling confident.
Excessive exposure – wearing the absolute minimum coverage possible, choosing styles that reveal more than they conceal, can read as desperate for attention rather than confident in attractiveness.
Logo obsession signals insecurity about luxury. When your swimwear, cover-ups, bag, and sunglasses all scream brand names, you're communicating that you need external validation of your luxury status rather than genuine confidence.
Inappropriate context creates vulgarity even in otherwise acceptable pieces. Wearing a bikini in resort restaurants, appearing essentially uncovered in common areas, or treating the entire resort like a private beach suggests you don't understand or don't care about shared space etiquette.
Over-styling for beach environments – full makeup that will melt, elaborate hairstyles that won't survive swimming, excessive jewelry that's inappropriate for water – suggests you're more concerned with how you appear in photos than actually enjoying the beach experience.
The Cultural Context
Beach elegance shifts slightly depending on where you're vacationing, and understanding these cultural differences prevents standing out for wrong reasons.
Mediterranean beach clubs in places like Capri, Mykonos, or the French Riviera tend toward more glamorous resort wear – nicer jewelry, more styled hair, slightly dressier evening attire. However, this still doesn't mean obvious wealth display or excessive exposure.
Caribbean and tropical destinations often embrace more casual, colorful resort wear. You can wear brighter prints and more relaxed styling while still maintaining quality and appropriate coverage.
Middle Eastern luxury resorts require much more conservative coverage – one-pieces over bikinis, longer cover-ups, and significantly more modest resort wear in general. Research specific resort guidelines before packing.
Asian luxury destinations like Bali or the Maldives generally welcome Western resort wear but appreciate when guests show cultural sensitivity by covering up when leaving resort grounds or visiting local areas.
The most sophisticated approach involves researching your specific destination's norms rather than assuming your usual resort wardrobe works everywhere.
You can absolutely be sexy, feel attractive, and enjoy your body while maintaining elegance. The key is understanding that genuine confidence create far more appeal than showing excessive skin ever can.

Olga’s Recommendations
The Foundation Beneath Everything

The most elegant approach to your wardrobe starts with a professional bra fitting at least once a year – your body changes with weight fluctuations, aging, and hormonal shifts, meaning the size you wore five years ago likely no longer serves you. I recommend visiting dedicated lingerie boutiques or high-end department store lingerie sections where fitters actually understand proper construction and sizing rather than simply pulling your usual size off the shelf. If you don’t live close to a store with a proper bra fitter, Hurray Kimmay has lots of good recommendations on her website.
Invest in quality basics in nude (matched to your actual skin tone, not beige), black, and white – these are your everyday foundations that should be replaced every six to twelve months as the elastic wears out.
Miami Swim Week
Resort Runway Reality

Miami Swim Week is a world-renowned showcase of swimwear collections. This high-energy event demonstrates exactly what we've explored this week about luxury leisure without vulgarity – the crucial distinction between runway drama designed for maximum impact and actual resort elegance meant for real life.
The shows offer inspiration and trend forecasting, but seasoned attendees know that true beachwear elegance lies in adapting these concepts through the lens of quality, fit, and appropriate coverage rather than directly replicating looks designed purely for visual impact. Whether you're planning to attend this celebrated event or simply building your resort wardrobe, remember that the most elegant approach means drawing inspiration from fashion without becoming enslaved to it.

The Elegance Game
In the following week, we will share the answer to this question. Click the answer that you think is right.

When attending a museum gala or art world fundraising event, what demonstrates the most sophisticated approach to engaging with the art and other attendees?
- Spend most of the evening networking in the bar area since the real value of these events is making connections, not looking at art you could see another time
- View the exhibition thoughtfully before the reception begins, then engage in conversations about specific pieces you genuinely appreciated while remaining open to others' interpretations
- Demonstrate your art expertise by offering detailed critiques of each piece within earshot of other guests to establish your credibility
- Focus exclusively on photographing yourself with notable artworks for social media rather than actually viewing the exhibition
